Our Story
The O’Leary is a tribute to a family whose history is deeply connected to La Conner. The story begins in 1939 when Maurice Patrick “Pat” O’Leary purchased the Puget Sound Mail sight unseen. For the next 34 years, he used the newspaper to tell local stories, advocate for the community, and help strengthen understanding between La Conner and the Swinomish community.
Pat’s brother, Michael “Mike” O’Leary, also made La Conner home, building a career with Dunlap Towing. Together, the brothers raised four daughters—Sally, Mary, Maureen, and Kathy—who remained connected to the area and continued their family’s tradition of community involvement. The story includes warm memories of growing up in a close-knit La Conner, along with a memorable 1947 story in which Mike famously pushed a peanut 578 feet down First Street with his nose after losing a bet.
Generations later, the family built The O’Leary with the hope that Kathy could return to La Conner, live near family, walk through town, and once again be surrounded by the channel and farmland she loved. Kathy passed away before she could make that return, but the building now serves as a symbolic homecoming and a lasting tribute to the O’Leary family’s love for La Conner.
